In my earlier blog posts, I mentioned that Apple has already introduced quite a few new products in 2026. If you want to catch up on those announcements, you can read more about them here and here. But that wasn’t all. There was another announcement that I didn’t see coming. Apple introduced the second generation of the AirPods Max. Wait what? Already? Yes, totally unexpected. The new AirPods Max 2 are here, and they come with some nice upgrades.

AirPods Max 2 details

These new headphones come with noticeable upgrades, especially when it comes to sound and noise cancellation. Thanks to the new H2 chip, the Active Noise Cancellation is even more powerful, making it easier to fully focus on your music, work, or just enjoy some quiet time. The H2 chip is not new and you can already find this chip in the AirPods Pro 2 and 3. Finally the AirPods Max 2 also is upgraded with this chip.

H2 Chip

The H2 chip is actually not new. It’s the same chip Apple already uses in the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3. But it’s a big step forward compared to the older H1 chip, and it brings a lot of improvements. Finally the AirPods Max 2 also has this new chip. It has the following:

  • Much better noise cancellation

The H2 chip can cancel significantly more background noise. Up to 2x better compared to older models.

  • Improved sound quality

It enables clearer, richer, and more detailed audio with better bass and overall balance.

  • Adaptive Transparency

Loud sounds (like traffic or construction) are automatically reduced, while you can still hear what’s happening around you.

  • Smarter audio features

Things like Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness automatically adjust your listening experience based on your environment.

  • Voice Isolation for calls

Your voice stays clear during calls, even in noisy environments.

  • Better connectivity and efficiency

The H2 chip uses Bluetooth 5.3 for more stable connections and improved performance

Audio Quaility

The audio quality on the AirPods Max 2 has improved. Apple added a new high dynamic range amplifier, which makes the sound even cleaner while keeping the rich and balanced sound signature the AirPods Max are known for.

With Spatial Audio, music and movies feel more detailed, with better separation of instruments, deeper and more consistent bass, and more natural mids and highs.
For those who really care about audio quality, there’s also support for lossless audio when using the included USB-C cable. This means you can enjoy music, movies, and even games in very high quality. It’s also a great addition for creators, as it allows for more precise audio work in apps like Logic Pro.
Pro Tip: Lossless audio quality is not available over Bluetooth.

Colors and availability

The AirPods Max 2 will be available to order starting March 25 in Midnight, Starlight, Orange, Purple, and Blue, with availability beginning early next month. These colors are the same as the previous model.

My Thoughts

I have to say, I was genuinely surprised when Apple announced the AirPods Max 2. It wasn’t something I expected this soon, and at the same time, I’m glad to see that Apple finally updated them with the H2 chip.

That said, the update feels a bit mixed to me. While the H2 chip is a welcome addition, it’s not exactly new anymore. Apple already introduced it back in 2022 with the AirPods Pro 2, and there are even rumors that a new H3 chip might already be on the way.

There are also a few things that stood out to me. One of the biggest complaints about the original AirPods Max was the weight, and I was hoping Apple would address that. But the new version has the exact same weight, which feels like a missed opportunity.

The same goes for the battery life. It’s still rated at around 20 hours, just like the previous model. That’s not bad, but compared to other noise-cancelling headphones in this price range, I expected a bit more here as well.

So after almost four years, it feels a little surprising that the update is mainly focused on the chip and software features. I personally hoped for a bit more in terms of hardware improvements.

But with that being said, it’s still a good step forward. The addition of the H2 chip finally unlocks all the newer features that were already available on other AirPods models, and that definitely makes the AirPods Max 2 more complete than before.
