Apple announces iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max with a powerful new camera

iPhone 18 Pro Is Here, but the Camera Isn’t the Only Big Upgrade

Apple has officially introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This year’s Pro models bring a variable-aperture camera, substantially longer battery life, a faster A20 Pro chip and the new Siri AI experience.

Some upgrades are designed for professional photographers and creators, but others could make a meaningful difference for almost every iPhone user. Here’s what you actually need to know.

A camera that behaves more like a real camera

The headline feature is the new 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture.

Previous iPhones relied heavily on computational photography to determine how much of an image appeared sharp or blurred. The iPhone 18 Pro adds a physical aperture system with six blades and four selectable settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0.

In practical terms, a wider aperture can capture more light and create a softer background, while a narrower aperture can keep more of the scene in focus. That should be particularly useful for group photos, portraits and low-light photography.

Apple also introduces manual Pro controls inside the Camera app. Users can adjust aperture, shutter speed and white balance while checking exposure through a histogram. These controls aren’t essential for casual photography, but they give experienced photographers more room to shape an image before pressing the shutter.

All three rear cameras now use 48MP sensors, while the telephoto camera offers up to 8x optical-quality zoom. Updated Photographic Styles add texture and grain controls, and Cinematic effects can be applied after recording video at up to 60 frames per second.

Apple Reference Image could be surprisingly important

One of the more interesting additions is Apple Reference Image.

When Reference mode is enabled, the camera records signed sensor information and creates an original reference version of the photograph. This can be compared with the edited image to help determine whether changes were made.

This won’t eliminate manipulated photography, but it could become a useful authenticity tool for journalists, professional photographers and organizations that need to verify where an image came from. Apple also plans to support metadata tools that identify content generated or modified using AI.

It is a specialised feature, but potentially one of the iPhone 18 Pro’s most important long-term contributions.

A20 Pro focuses on AI and sustained performance

Inside both phones is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a 2-nanometer process. It combines a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and two 16-core Neural Engines.

Apple claims the GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro. However, peak benchmark numbers only tell part of the story. The redesigned vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the previous cooling system, helping the phone maintain its performance for longer.
That matters when playing demanding games, editing video or running larger AI models directly on the device. A fast processor is less useful if it becomes hot and slows down after several minutes, so the improved cooling system may be just as significant as the A20 Pro itself.

The phones also include Apple’s N1 wireless chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. A new C2 modem promises better cellular reliability, faster uploads and lower energy consumption.

Battery life may be the upgrade people notice most

Camera specifications attract attention, but battery life affects every hour you use a phone.

Apple rates the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback. The iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches as much as 45 hours. That is a stunning six hours more than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Charging is faster too. With a compatible power adapter, the iPhone 18 Pro can reach approximately 50 percent in 15 minutes. Apple says five minutes of wired charging can provide the Pro Max with around seven hours of video playback.

These figures come from Apple’s own controlled testing, so real-world results will depend on signal strength, display brightness, apps and how the phone is used. Nevertheless, the Pro Max looks particularly attractive for travellers and heavy users.

Siri AI arrives with an important catch

The iPhone 18 Pro & 18 Pro Max launches with iOS 27 and Apple’s new Siri AI.

Siri can use information from messages, email and photos to answer more personal questions. It can understand what is currently displayed on the screen and perform actions connected to that content. A Camera mode can also identify objects or information in front of the user.

It sounds like the Siri upgrade users have been waiting for, but there is a reason to remain cautious: Siri AI is launching in beta, initially in English, and availability can vary by region. I wouldn’t buy the iPhone 18 Pro exclusively for Siri until we know how reliably these features work outside Apple’s demonstrations.

A smaller Dynamic Island and familiar design

Apple hasn’t completely redesigned the iPhone, but it has reduced the size of the Dynamic Island. It can now display as many as three Live Activities simultaneously, making it easier to follow navigation, music, sports results and other ongoing information.

The iPhone 18 Pro retains a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max uses a 6.9-inch panel. Both are Super Retina XDR OLED displays with ProMotion refresh rates of up to 120Hz.

The phones use an aluminium unibody design with Ceramic Shield on the front and back. Available colours are black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy finish.

Should you upgrade?

The answer depends heavily on the iPhone you already own.

Owners of an iPhone 17 Pro probably don’t need to upgrade unless they specifically want variable aperture, substantially better battery life or the increased sustained performance. Most everyday tasks are unlikely to feel dramatically different.

For someone using an iPhone 14 Pro or an older model, the combined improvements to the camera, battery, processing power, charging speed and AI features make the iPhone 18 Pro a much more compelling upgrade.

The Pro Max appears to be the best choice for battery life and a larger display. The standard Pro offers most of the same capabilities in a smaller and lighter body.

Price and availability

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the United States, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both begin with 256GB of storage and can be configured with 512GB, 1TB or 2TB.

Pre-orders open on Saturday, September 12, with retail availability beginning Friday, September 18 in the first group of countries. Local prices, trade-in offers and feature availability will vary per country.
