How to get and use the new Siri in iOS 27

The new Siri is one of the biggest features in iOS 27, but there’s one important thing to know before you can start using it:

Installing iOS 27 does not automatically unlock the new Siri.

After updating, you first need to join Apple’s New Siri waitlist. Once Apple gives your iPhone access, the new Siri will download and become available on your device.

Here’s how to get started.

1. Update your iPhone to iOS 27

First, make sure your iPhone is running iOS 27.

Go to:

Settings → General → Software Update

Download and install the latest available version of iOS 27.

Keep in mind that the new Siri requires a compatible Apple Intelligence iPhone.

2. Open Siri settings

After installing iOS 27:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Scroll down and tap Siri.

  3. Look for Try New Siri.

If your iPhone is compatible and the feature is available for your device, you should see this option inside the Siri menu.

3. Join the New Siri waitlist

Tap Try New Siri.

You’ll see a screen introducing the new Siri experience.

Tap Join Waitlist, then tap Continue to confirm.

That’s it. Your iPhone is now on Apple’s waitlist for the new Siri.

4. Wait for access

After joining, you should see Joined Waitlist in Siri settings.

You don’t need to do anything else.

Apple will notify you when the new Siri is ready for your iPhone. Waiting times can vary. Some users may get access fairly quickly, while others may have to wait several hours or longer.

Tip: Keep your iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power when possible so any required Siri files can download in the background.

5. Check if the new Siri is ready

Once Apple gives your iPhone access, you should receive a notification on your Lock Screen letting you know that the New Siri is ready.

You can also check manually by going back to:

Settings → Siri

The New Siri section should now show that the feature is available instead of Joined Waitlist.

Your iPhone may still need to download some additional Siri and Apple Intelligence files before everything is fully ready.

6. Activate the new Siri

Once setup is complete, you can still activate Siri in the familiar ways.

You can:

  • Say “Siri”

  • Say “Hey Siri”

  • Press and hold the Side button

But the experience now looks and feels different.

When Siri is active, you’ll see the new Siri interface and animations instead of the older Siri design.

7. Learn the new swipe-down gestures

Once the new Siri is installed, iOS 27 also changes what happens when you swipe down from the top of your iPhone.

You now have three different swipe-down areas:

  • Swipe down from the left → opens Notification Center

  • Swipe down from the middle → opens Siri Search or Ask

  • Swipe down from the right → opens Control Center

The middle gesture is new and gives you very quick access to the new Siri.

So instead of holding the Side button every time, you can simply swipe down from the top-middle of the screen to open Siri Search or Ask.

From here, you can immediately type your question or use your voice.

This takes a little getting used to at first, but after a few days it becomes one of the fastest ways to access Siri in iOS 27.

8. Type or talk naturally to Siri

One of the biggest differences with the new Siri is that you don’t have to think as much about the exact way you phrase a command.

You can simply ask questions naturally.

For example:

“What’s the weather tomorrow?”

Then follow up with:

“And what about Sunday?”

Siri can understand that your second question is connected to the first one.

This makes Siri feel more like a conversation instead of a series of separate commands.

9. Ask follow-up questions

You also don’t need to repeat all the details every time you ask something.

For example:

You: “What’s the weather in London this weekend?”

Then:

You: “What about Sunday?”

And then:

You: “Will I need an umbrella?”

Siri can keep the context of the conversation and understand that you’re still talking about your trip to London.

10. Ask Siri to find information for you

The new Siri can also use information stored on your iPhone to help answer questions.

Instead of remembering exactly which app contains something, you can simply ask Siri.

Try things like:

  • “Find the photos I took at the beach last weekend.”

  • “What was the restaurant someone recommended to me?”

  • “What time is my flight tomorrow?”

  • “Find that message about dinner tonight.”

This can save you from manually searching through apps like Photos, Mail or Messages yourself. Apple Intelligence now does it for you.

11. Ask Siri about what you’re looking at

Siri can also better understand what is currently on your screen.

For example, while looking at something in Safari, Photos or another supported app, activate Siri and ask a question about it.

You could say:

  • “Summarize this.”

  • “What does this mean?”

  • “Tell me more about this.”

  • “Translate this.”

You don’t always have to explain what you’re referring to because Siri can use what you’re currently viewing as context.

12. Let Siri perform actions for you

The new Siri isn’t only about answering questions.

It can also perform more actions inside supported apps.

For example, you may be able to say:

  • “Send this photo to Lisa.”

  • “Add this appointment to my calendar.”

  • “Move my meeting to 3 PM.”

  • “Rate this photo with 5 stars.”

Exactly what Siri can do depends on the app and whether that action is supported.

If “Try New Siri” Doesn’t Appear

If Try New Siri doesn’t appear under Settings > Siri, first confirm that your iPhone supports the new Siri. You should also make sure:

  • Apple Intelligence is turned on.

  • Your iPhone and Siri are using a supported English language.

  • The feature is available in your country or region.

  • Your iPhone is running the latest available iOS 27 beta.

The new Siri currently supports selected English variants, including English for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and several other regions. However, it is not currently available on iPhone or iPad in the European Union.

One Important Thing to Remember

Installing iOS 27 is only the first step. You must also activate the new Siri separately.

The full process is:

Install iOS 27 > Open Settings > Tap Siri > Select Try New Siri > Join the Waitlist > Wait for Access > Install the New Siri

If you have just updated to iOS 27 and Siri still looks the same, open Siri settings and check whether you have joined the waitlist.

Many beta testers have already received access, so approval may be faster than it was during the first developer betas. However, waiting times can still vary.

Once access is approved, your iPhone will download the files required for the new Siri. Keep your device connected to Wi-Fi and power while the installation finishes.

After installation, you can explore Siri’s redesigned interface, the new swipe-down gesture, voice customization controls and other Advanced Siri features.
