Apple Unveils iPhone Duo: Its First Foldable iPhone Changes How iOS Works

Apple has officially entered the foldable-phone market with the iPhone Duo, a completely new kind of iPhone featuring two displays, a titanium hinge and software designed for multitasking.

Starting at $1,999, this is also one of Apple’s most expensive iPhones. So, what makes the iPhone Duo special, and is a folding screen enough to justify that price?

Here’s everything you need to know.

A compact iPhone that opens into a small tablet

When closed, the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display designed for normal one-handed use. Opening the device reveals a much larger 7.6-inch folding display, giving you additional space for movies, games, reading and productivity.

Both are Super Retina XDR OLED displays with ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness.

The inner screen also has a nano-texture finish that reduces glare and makes the crease less noticeable. Apple has hidden the inner FaceTime camera underneath the display to avoid placing a visible camera cutout in the middle of the screen.

When opened, the iPhone Duo measures only 5.2mm thick. When folded, however, it is 11.3mm thick and weighs 254 grams. It may be compact, but it won’t be the lightest iPhone in your pocket.

iOS 27 is built around the folding screen

The hardware is interesting, but the success of the iPhone Duo will depend heavily on its software.

Apple has adapted iOS 27 so that apps and interface elements respond as the phone is opened, closed or rotated. The Dock, status information and navigation controls can move to the side of the display, leaving more vertical space for content.

Most importantly, Split View brings proper two-app multitasking to the iPhone. You can open two apps beside each other, swap either one without closing the other and save frequently used app combinations. This is really cool, but this is also what is already available on the Z Fold 8.

That could let you:

• Watch a video while replying to messages.

• Compare products while shopping online.

• Keep Maps open beside a travel itinerary.

• Join a video call while viewing a document.

• Ask Siri about content displayed in another app

You can also open two windows from the same app, such as two Safari pages. Apple’s own apps have been optimized for the larger display, while apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already being adapted for the folding design.

This is where the iPhone Duo begins to feel like more than an ordinary iPhone with a flexible screen.

Apple Pencil support is coming

The iPhone Duo will support the USB-C Apple Pencil later this year. It can be used on both displays for taking notes, drawing and marking up documents.

That makes the Duo an interesting middle ground between the iPhone and iPad mini. It probably won’t replace an iPad for serious illustration or lengthy work, but the ability to carry a Pencil-compatible screen in your pocket could appeal to students, designers and frequent note-takers.

Unfortunately, Apple Pencil support won’t be available immediately at launch.

Apple says the hinge is built to last

Durability has always been one of the biggest concerns surrounding foldable phones.

Apple’s answer is a precision hinge containing more than 100 components. The phone is reinforced internally, while layers of strong glass, custom adhesives and a titanium support plate protect the folding display.

The exterior combines a Grade 5 titanium enclosure with Ceramic Shield protection. Apple has also given the iPhone Duo an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating.

Those specifications sound reassuring, but a foldable display still contains more moving parts and softer materials than a conventional phone. Lab claims cannot tell us how the screen and hinge will look after thousands of folds, exposure to dust or a year inside a pocket. Long-term testing will be especially important here.

Another notable change is authentication. The iPhone Duo uses Touch ID in its side button instead of Face ID, allowing the same sensor to work whether the phone is open or closed.

Two displays create new camera tricks

The iPhone Duo features two 48MP rear cameras: a Fusion Main camera and an Ultra Wide camera. The Main camera also provides a 2x optical-quality zoom, although the device doesn’t include the dedicated long-range telephoto camera found on the iPhone 18 Pro.

The folding design introduces several new ways to take pictures.

Duo Preview displays the camera’s live view on the outer screen, allowing the person being photographed to check the composition. You can also use the higher-quality rear camera for selfies while seeing yourself on the outer display.

Smart Take uses on-device AI to recognize when people are posing and automatically capture the picture. Kid Cue displays Peanuts animations on the outer screen to encourage children to look toward the camera.

The Duo can also stand partially folded without a tripod, which should be useful for group photos, FaceTime calls and time-lapse videos.

Video capabilities include 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120 frames per second with the Main camera. Cinematic effects can be added after recording, while Audio Mix can improve voices or separate music from other sounds.

These aren’t necessarily better cameras than the iPhone 18 Pro system, but the second screen makes them more flexible. iPhone Duo comes in two colors: Star White & Night Sky.

A20 Pro powers the entire experience

The iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. It includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine for Apple Intelligence and other on-device AI tasks.

Driving two displays while running multiple apps creates additional heat, so Apple has added a custom vapor chamber. The company claims the Duo delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.

A dedicated display engine manages both screens and keeps animations running smoothly as the phone changes orientation.

For most people, the real benefit won’t be benchmark results. It will be whether apps remain responsive during Split View, gaming and extended use without the phone becoming uncomfortably warm.

Dual batteries provide all-day power

There is a battery on each side of the iPhone Duo. Apple’s software manages them as one combined power source.

Apple estimates:

• Up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display.

• Up to 31 hours using the inner display.

• Up to 24 hours of mixed everyday use.

The phone can reach approximately 50 percent charge in 20 minutes using a compatible 60W or higher adapter. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging at up to 25W are supported as well. This is the same as the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Battery life will depend greatly on how frequently the large inner screen is used. Apple’s figures come from controlled testing, so we’ll need independent tests to understand how the Duo performs in everyday conditions.

Siri AI has more room to work

Siri AI arrives on the iPhone Duo through iOS 27. It can use personal context from messages, emails and photos, understand onscreen content and help perform actions across apps.

The larger display should make Siri more useful because you can keep the assistant visible beside the information you’re working with. Conversation history can also sync privately across Apple devices through iCloud.

Apple says requests are processed on the device when possible, with Private Cloud Compute handling more demanding tasks.

However, Siri AI launches in beta and is initially rolling out in English. Buyers shouldn’t assume every advertised AI feature will be available in every country or language on launch day.

A few compromises to consider

The iPhone Duo is a fascinating first-generation product, but several points deserve consideration:

• The $1,999 starting price is significantly higher than a conventional Pro iPhone.

• At 254 grams, it is a relatively heavy phone.

• There is no dedicated long-range telephoto camera.

• It uses Touch ID instead of Face ID.

• Apple Pencil support is coming after launch.

• Siri AI is initially a beta feature.

• The device is eSIM-only worldwide.

• The long-term durability of its folding screen remains unproven.

The absence of a physical SIM tray could be particularly important for travellers who regularly use local SIM cards. Apple says eSIM is supported by hundreds of carriers, but coverage and activation options still vary by country.

Who is the iPhone Duo for?

The iPhone Duo makes the most sense for people who regularly multitask, watch content, edit documents or want a larger display without carrying a separate tablet.

It could be especially appealing to:

• Mobile professionals who work across multiple apps.

• Travellers who want one device for entertainment and communication.

• Content creators who can use the outer display as a camera preview.

• Apple users interested in handwritten notes and Apple Pencil support.

• Early adopters who want Apple’s first major new iPhone design in years.

If you primarily use your phone for messaging, social media, photography and occasional browsing, the iPhone 18 Pro will probably offer better value and a more advanced zoom camera.

Price and release date

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States with 256GB of storage. It will also be available with 512GB, 1TB or 2TB.

The two finishes are Star White and Night Sky. Preorders begin on October 16, with availability starting October 23.

My first take

The iPhone Duo isn’t simply Apple’s answer to other foldable phones. In my opinion, the most exciting feature is how Apple has redesigned iOS to take full advantage of the two displays.

Split View, dual-screen camera previews, hands-free shooting and Apple Pencil support give the folding design a real purpose. At the same time, $1,999 is a substantial price for a first-generation device whose long-term durability remains unknown. But its Apple and I am 100% convinced that this iPhone Duo will sell anyway.

I would definitely pre-order the iPhone Duo. It’s a beautiful device, and I especially love the smooth fade animation when you open and close it. The rounded edges also make the display feel much larger and more immersive than I expected.
