Apple has announced the next-generation HomePod mini, bringing Siri AI, improved audio, a faster S10 chip and a colourful new visual experience called Sound Glow to its smallest smart speaker.
Officially named HomePod mini 2, the new model will be available in pink, green, blue, white and midnight. Apple has kept the familiar compact design, but the technology inside has received a significant upgrade.
HomePod mini 2 can operate as a single smart speaker, form a stereo pair or become part of a multiroom audio system. When connected to the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, four compatible HomePod speakers can also create a complete wireless surround-sound setup.
For me, the most interesting upgrade is not simply the improved audio. Siri AI could finally make HomePod feel like a genuinely intelligent home assistant rather than a speaker that is mostly used for music, timers and basic smart-home commands.
Siri AI Is Coming to HomePod mini
HomePod mini 2 will receive Siri AI through a future software update.
The new assistant is designed to understand more natural conversations, answer general questions and remember the context of follow-up requests. It can also provide current information using knowledge gathered from the web.
When paired with an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad, Siri AI can use personal context from applications such as Messages, Calendar and Reminders.
You could ask Siri to find a song that someone recommended in a message, locate a recipe from an email, add ingredients to a grocery list or create a reminder connected to an upcoming calendar event.
HomePod mini 2 can recognise the voices of up to six people. Each person can receive their own music, messages, reminders and other personalised results.
Users without a compatible Apple Intelligence device will still receive Siri AI’s conversational features, general knowledge and improved music discovery. Accessing personal information and completing actions across applications will require a supported iPhone or iPad.

Upgraded Audio With the S10 Chip
HomePod mini 2 is powered by Apple’s S10 chip and uses computational audio to analyse music in real time.
The speaker continually adjusts its dynamic range, loudness and acoustic performance according to what is playing. Its 360-degree sound design is intended to distribute audio around the room instead of directing it towards one position.
One HomePod mini 2 should be enough for a bedroom, office or smaller kitchen. Two speakers can be connected as a stereo pair for a wider and more immersive listening experience.
Multiple HomePod and HomePod mini speakers can also work together through multiroom audio, allowing the same music to follow you around the house.
Four-Speaker Surround sound with Apple TV 4K
One of the biggest new features is support for four-speaker home-theatre audio.
When four HomePod mini 2 speakers are paired with the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, the system can recognise where each speaker is positioned. It then calibrates the audio timing and volume levels automatically for the room.
Users can also combine a matching pair of second-generation HomePods at the front with two HomePod mini 2 speakers at the rear.
This gives Apple users a cleaner wireless alternative to a traditional surround-sound system. However, it requires the latest Apple TV 4K and four speakers, so the total price could become expensive.

HomePod mini can now become a Mac Speaker
YES FINALLY ;-) HomePod mini 2 can serve as the default speaker for a Mac.
This allows it to provide more powerful sound for music, films, gaming, FaceTime and video calls. A stereo pair could be particularly interesting for an iMac or Mac mini desk setup, especially because the new HomePod colours complement Apple’s colourful desktop computers.
This is a small addition, but it makes HomePod mini 2 more useful outside the living room.
Sound Glow Brings Music to Life
Apple has introduced a new visual feature called Sound Glow.
The illuminated surface on top of HomePod mini 2 can glow and pulse in time with the music. Its colours are generated from the album artwork of the currently playing song, creating a different lighting effect for each track.
Sound Glow responds to elements such as bass and treble in real time. It can also display custom animations for ambient soundscapes, including rain.
It is not an essential feature, but it gives the HomePod mini more personality. The light could look particularly attractive in a darker room, although users may want the option to reduce or disable it at night.

My Take
HomePod mini 2 looks familiar on the outside, but the combination of Siri AI, an upgraded S10 chip and expanded audio features could make this a more meaningful update than its design suggests.
The original HomePod mini already delivered impressive sound for its size. This generation attempts to make the speaker more useful throughout the day, not only for playing music, but also for finding personal information, controlling the home, answering questions and handling everyday tasks.
Sound Glow is a fun addition, and the five colour options give buyers more freedom to match the speaker with their room or Mac. The ability to use HomePod mini 2 as a default Mac speaker also makes it more appealing for a desk setup.
The four-speaker surround-sound option could be excellent for people already invested in Apple’s ecosystem. Automatic room calibration should make it easier to configure than a traditional system, although buying four speakers and a new Apple TV 4K will not be inexpensive.
